The Common Cents Conference, the first-ever conference to address financial issues across Maryland, Washington D.C. and Virginia, is an opportunity to learn about the financial problems facing residents and innovative program models to help residents achieve all their financial dreams. The Common Cents Conference will be hosted by free tax preparation and asset building coalitions which conduct critical outreach to insure that low-income families receive the Earned Income Tax Credit, provide free or low-cost tax preparation, and connect families to appropriate financial services and education. These coalitions serve more than 40,000 residents each year. The Rural Maryland Council is one of the organizations sponsoring this event. For more information.
The RMC is pleased to announce that Robin McKinney, Director of the Maryland CASH Campaign, will provide technical assistance and programmatic consultation to the RMC’s Rural Families Direct Service Grant Program this year. The Maryland CASH Campaign, which Robin directs, is a new state-wide network that promotes financial stability for low-income households throughout the state. Robin recently completed the Maryland Asset Building Initiative, a year-long research project connecting and strengthening existing asset building efforts and creating avenues for policy research and advocacy. The Rural Maryland Foundation -- a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization – was formed in 2001 to support the efforts of rural leaders who work to improve the quality of life in our smaller communities. At its April meeting, the Board of Trustees voted to undertake a fundraising campaign for the FY 2009 Strengthening the Well Being of Rural Maryland Families Program, which is administered by the Rural Maryland Council and provides grants to non-profit organizations that help vulnerable rural families become economically self-reliant over time. The Foundation's goal is to raise $25,000 by Fall 2008 when the next grant cycle begins.
For the past three years, the Rural Families program has been completely funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Despite the enormous need, no taxpayer dollars have ever been requested or used for the Rural Families program. Now, you can help our grassroots efforts to help rural families help themselves.
For more information, see the Strengthening Rural Maryland Families Fact Sheet or the Rural Maryland Foundation's Fact Sheet.
