Rural Ag & Business Forums

This 18-month project will marry TEDCO's core competencies of commercializing technology out of federal laboratories with the USDA Agricultural Research Service technologies which offer numerous opportunities for area farmers, rural businesses and entrepreneurs. Showcases and forums will be held in five rural regions of Maryland: Southern, Western, Northeastern, Lower Eastern Shore and Upper Eastern Shore. The showcases will highlight technologies available through ARS that are pertinent to the specific geographical region. The RMC is partnering with TEDCO to plan these events. The RMC joined with the University of Maryland School of Public Health and other partners to host The Statewide Health Care Reform Forum on Dec. 14, 2010. This day-long seminar helped rural citizens understand how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (i.e., Federal Health Care Reform) would impact rural citizens, rural communities and rural businesses. Presentations originated out of College Park and were webcast to four rural community colleges around the state, each of which had their own forum. For more information and to view the webcast.


The Rural Roundtable on Maryland Telehealth Survey, December 6, 2010 in Annapolis, hosted by the RMC in partnership with the Maryland Rural Health Association and the Upper Shore Regional Council. The roundtable released the results of the Maryland Telehealth and Telemedicine Survey, discussed barriers to implementing telehealth systems and considered recommendations for moving forward. Rural Matters: Emerging Health Challenges and Opportuntiies, October 21-22, 2010 at Rocky Gap near Cumberland. The Rural Maryland Council was a major sponsor of (and a workshop presenter at) this two-day conference, which was designed to help rural health stakeholders enter the next decade with a clearer picture of the challenges and opportunities facing rural communities. 2010 Southern Regional Rural Convening, held May 11-12, 2010 in Charlotte, N.C. in cooperation with Partners for Rural America (PRA) and other State Rural Development Councils in the region; funded through a Cooperative Agreement with USDA-Rural Development and PRA.
